CAN/MEX CH Cinnstar's American Widgeon CAN/MEX CD WC
For many, Widgeon was the first Toller people in the mid and late 80’s saw a picture of. His photograph taken by myself graced many articles and a few all breed/rare breed books that included the Toller. Widgeon’s show career took him both South (Mexico) and North (Canada). We went all the way to Mexico City for the World Shows in 1984. I also showed him along the Mexican Border in Ensenada, Mexicalli and Tijuana. In Southern California many conformation and obedience enthusiasts compete at these border shows, and Widgeon managed to beat these dogs and win a group second. He was one of the first three Tollers to receive a Mexican Championship. His litter sister Patty, and his mother Teal were the others. In Canada, Widgeon began his show career at the tender age of just a wee bit over six months; he was Reserve Winners Male at the 1984 Canadian National Specialty in London Ontario Canada. Widgeon finished quickly, taking Winners Male in several boosters.

In obedience Widgeon was a consistent good worker earning his titles without a failure. In the field there are several “Widgeon Stories”. I nick named him “The Slow Motion Dog”. Not that he disliked the field. Just the opposite, I think he wanted to savor every moment, smell (and water) the roses (and every bush he could find along the way). It was that habit which landed him his two best stories, and how he became my first “collar” dog. Widgeon was returning from a long land-water-land retrieve of about 150 yards and was within 15 yards of me when he dropped his duck, lifted his leg on it, picked it back up and went smartly into heel. At another test he was going to heel with his duck when he spied one of the judges chairs. He quickly made a slight detour, hiked his leg and not only got the chair, but the judges coffee cup. I guess he told them what he thought of their test. The judges did not see this. This was quite frustrating, so with e-collars in their infancy, I bought the best at the time, and that ended Widgeon’s leg lifting problems. Widgeon, a sound well-balanced Toller, had a friendly easy-going disposition. He was never bred. I had only his sister and mother at the time, and there were virtually no other breeding Tollers in the Southern California area to breed him to.
