CAN/MEX CH HR Cinnstar's Ian Of Little River CAN/MEX/NSDTRC CD WC***

So many firsts. Ian was the first male born from my first USA litter. He was my first field trial dog. The first (and Currently the ONLY) Toller to place at an Open All Age Field Trial. That achevement is noted after Ian's name by the ***. Most people only think of Ian's field prowess, but he was far more then that. There are so many "Ian" stories. He was truly a Toller of superlatives.

In conformation: Ian slipped his disk a couple of months before the Canadian National Specialty in New Brunswick. Shaved on both front legs from the IV's, he still won Best of Breed at the morning All Breed show (before the afternoon National Specialty) defeating several BIS winners. Ian completed his Can CH in just a few shows. Ian was not shown in the USA except for a few times as a Veteran. He was best Veteran at the 1996 NSDTRC National Specialty. One of my fondest moments was four years latter, at the NSDTRC National Specialty 2000 Ian entered the conformation ring for the last time at age 11, placing in the Veterans class, a standing ovation following him around the ring.

In Obedience: I entered him at a Canadian show, and then decided to also enter him in Novice B obedience. He was not fully trained for it, as we had only done obedience that was necessary for the field. I had to teach him the stand and down stays a month before the trial. His first time doing the group Sits and Down stays with other dogs was… in the ring! All his obedience scores were above 190 in all three countries. He also passed the Veterans obedience at the 2000 NSDTRC National Specialty. I had to rely on hand signals, he was almost totally deaf.

But Ian was best known for his field achievements. He is the first and only Toller to have Field Trial CH points in North America. He took a second place in Open All Age at 26 months Breeder-Owner Trained and Handled. He had several other placements and finishes, needing a first to finish his FTCH. Because he was my first, I made several mistakes taking suggestions from people I trained with. One was to steady him too fast. The other was I put too much pressure on him too early. Thus Ian developed into a precise but not a very exciting worker. He was never a great natural marker, but he was a superbly well-trained retriever; he knew where the birds were supposed to be. His blinds, especially his cold water blinds were second to none. I had some grand plans for us, so I left him with the Pro I threw birds for, spending the time building an aircraft that would fly us to the events. Ian resented this change immeasurably. It was a large kennel situation; he was just another dog on the truck. This was even though I still went out and trained two or three times a week.

He became trial wise. He looked like a true All Age dog during training, running hard. Just before I retired him, at a trial he literally walked to the marks. I took him home and he did not retrieve or leave the yard for three years. When I moved to the Carolinas, I discovered HRC hunt tests. Because they are very exciting, and not at all resembling a field trial, Ian decided that he liked them, and performed admirably even thou he was getting on in years. He had one pass in Finished along with his HR title. The Working Certificate Tests resembled Field Trials too much, he would not do them.

During his last years he became Don's constant companion. Don also brought to the Cinnstar household an ancient Cock-a-Poo named Coaster. He and Ian became close friends and when Coaster passed, Ian spent days looking for him.

Ian was not bred very many times, and his best-known progeny are from his kennelmate; Fox. Flash from the second Ian-Fox litter has gone to the Rainbow Bridge, as are his brothers Rusty, Rembrandt, and Lincoln. Most of Ian's linage carries on from a female; Kestrel from the first Ian-Fox litter. Kestrel was Inca's dam. I had wanted to freeze his semen, but never got around to it. A mistake I deeply regret.

Ian is buried in South Carolina next to his pal Coaster and kennelmate Fox.
